Wat Phra Kaew Chiang Rai was once named as Wat Pha Eia, or Pha Phai. But the origin of the name ’Wat Phra Kaew’ started long time ago. In the year 1434, the chedi of the temple had been stricken by a thunder and a beautiful, glorious, sparkling emerald Buddha statue appeared. Therefore villagers has called the temple ‘Wat Phra Kaew’ ever since.
Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai is quite different from the one in Bangkok. The one in Bangkok is surrounded with large roads and a lot of cars. But the one in Chiang Rai is located in the middle of trees, grass, and lovely natural atmosphere. You will feel totally relaxed and blessed.
