Located in the misty hills of Mae Hong Son, Namtok Mae Surin National Park is one of Thailand’s most untouched and breathtaking national parks. Namtok Mae Surin is home to four main forest types: mixed deciduous, dipterocarp, dry evergreen, and pine forest. These dense forests house an incredible diversity of plant species including dipterocarp trees, pines, rare orchids, and unique local herbs. Fauna found here include the Asian black bear, serow, gibbons, hornbills, and even cobras, making it a crucial conservation area in Thailand’s far north.

For those seeking deeper immersion in nature, the Huai Mae Sakut Nature Trail is a rewarding 1.86-kilometer interpretive route. Managed by the park’s ranger unit, this trail follows the river through deciduous and semi-evergreen forests. It features 17 nature stations that explain the ecosystem and highlight key species. Along this path, visitors can discover the tranquil Mae Sakut and Kuet Luang waterfalls, surrounded by thick green canopies.

Ban Huai Hee to Doi Pui Luang Trek is a longer, more demanding journey. It winds through varied ecosystems, from mixed deciduous to montane forests, and ends at an open summit meadow. The trail offers insight into highland Karen culture and incredible biodiversity.

🌿 Natural Marvels to Explore

Nam Tok Mae Surin (Mae Surin waterfall): A single jet of water leaping off a cliff face and plunging gracefully onto the rocks 100 meters below, Mae Surin waterfall is one of the tallest and most beautiful single tier waterfalls in Thailand. The fall can be viewed from the hills across the valley, or you can hike down the hills for a closer look. On the way to the waterfall, there are Karen and Hmong hill tribe villages as well as the famous Toong Buat Tong, or fields of wild sun flowers, which bloom for two weeks only in the month of November.

Nam Tok Pa Bong: Pa Bong waterfall plummets 20 meters before scattering into smaller cascades. It is conveniently located close to the provincial capital. During the hot season there is no water there.

Doi Pui, located in the heart of the park, offers one of the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints in the region. At 1,722 meters, the summit features a wide plateau of grasslands and cool breezes throughout the year. The trail up Doi Pui winds through vibrant montane forests, blooming rhododendrons, and leads to unique spots such as Pha Phieng Fa cliff, the mysterious wreckage of a WWII-era Japanese aircraft, and fields of wildflowers. The hike is worth every step, particularly for sunrise watchers and photographers.

Huay Fai Kor: Located at the park’s headquarters and bordering the Pai river is Her Majesty the Queen’s Project dedicated to conservation of flora and fauna. The area contains a recreational garden and a small zoo featuring a Malay sun bear, leopard cat and an aviary among others. About 200 meters away on the bank of the river is a recreation area which is an excellent place for swimming and relaxation.

Nam Hu Haichai Cave: Perhaps the most unique feature of the park is Nam Hu Haichai Cave, also called the “Breathing Cave.” Every 25 minutes, water bursts out from the cave’s inner wall — a rhythmic motion that feels as if the cave is breathing. Located just 15 kilometers from the park’s ranger unit, this small cave offers a mystical encounter with geology and nature combined.

Doi San Fa Viewpoint: Don’t miss the Doi San Fa Viewpoint, located just 3 kilometers from the ranger station. Perched at nearly 950 meters above sea level, it provides a sweeping view of Mae Hong Son city and the surrounding valleys. It is especially beautiful in winter when morning mist blankets the landscape in soft white. Meanwhile, near the park headquarters, the Huai Fai Kho Reservoir offers peaceful water views perfect for canoeing, mountain biking, and short treks.

🏕️ Facilities and Best Time to Visit

Facilities include campsites, clean restrooms, a visitor center, and local ranger assistance. The best time to visit is from November to February when the climate is cool and clear. For safety, some trails and roads are only accessible during the dry and cool seasons.

🧭 How to Get There

From Mae Hong Son town, drive south on Highway 108 toward Khun Yuam. Before reaching the town, turn left onto Route 1263 and continue for approximately 12 kilometers to reach the park entrance. Roads are more manageable in the dry season. Many travelers prefer a Private Tour from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son or opt to explore the route via the scenic Mae Hong Son Loop Tour.
