Wat Phra That Chom Tong ‘Track the smell of Lanna.’
Northern Thailand was once a part of Lanna Kingdom. Although it’s been centuries, but Lanna culture has never gone. We can still find some Lanna architectures that reflect the lives of people in the past. Same at this temple, Wat Phra That Chom Tong, the one in Phayao Province.
Wat Phra That Chom Tong is a good temple for all families. Everyone can see art of Lanna and how beautiful it is.
First, let’s take each other’s hands and see the golden pagoda, which is the highlight of the temple. The pagoda, a Lanna one, is called ‘Phra That Chom Tong’ and is about 30 metres high. There is a 9-metre-wide platform under it, with Thai carvings of the 12 zodiacs. If you get there during day time, you will see how stunning it is when the pagoda sparkle in the middle of sunlight.
There is a legend about the pagoda that you should tell your children while visiting the temple. It says, Lord Buddha once travelled to Phu Kham Yao Town for a religious purpose. He used a mountain on the north of Nhong Aiang as his shelter. Later, he gave a part of his hair to Phra Chao Asok, as he wanted Phra Chao Asok to keep it in the cave on the mountain. However, the hair was instead given to a goldsmith, who buried it under a 70-metre-deep well. After that, he constructed a pagoda and blocked the hole of the well. However, that wasn’t the final construction of the pagoda, as it was later renovated by Kruba Sri Wichai, Kruba Kaew, and Kruba Panya. You know, things can get older and they need to be developed, in order to always be in fine condition. This pagoda has been valuable. Therefore, it has been renovated, in order that people of later generations will still have chances to see it.
Pay respect to the pagoda for once. Inside, there are parts of Lord Buddha’s relics of hair and left hand, all of which are hundreds years old.
Then give yourself and your family some time to have a sightseeign around the temple. Take photos and be happy. There are many spots in the temple that allow you to get nice photography.
The monument is also located within Kwan Phayao. Pho Khun Ngam Muang was one a king of Phayao, which was named Muang Phu Kham Yao in the past. He was a kind-hearted king. Therefore, people loved him so much that they built him a monument. Let’s see the monument and pay respect to it.
This is a temple in the middle of Kwan Phayao Lake. Most parts of it has been sunken under the water for years. Only its pagoda has sticked through the water surface. Annually, there will be ‘Wian Tian Festival’, which you will hold candles in your hands and go around the pagoda on a boar. That’s fantastic. Go with your family for once in lifetime.
