Wat Phra Nang Din ‘See fabric-weaved dolls and the Buddha statue without base.’
Take your children to Wat Phra Nang Din, a temple with a no-base Lord Buddha statue.
Here comes another learning source for your children. Why don’t get them there on your vacation?
Yes. Regularly, all Lord Buddha statues sit/stand on bases, but not this one. This one is just on the ground. The legend says, villagers already tried to build a base for the statue for 2 times. For the first time, the statue couldn’t be lifted at all. For the second time, a thunder struck the vihara. Therefore, villagers have left the statue alone, causing it to have been on the ground all long.
Tell the above story to your children. Teach them what became of the statue. Then they can tell this to their children and grandchildren later.
Anyway, the statue is respected by many people. It’s an art of Chiangsaen style covered in copper color. You just get inside the vihara with your children and pay respect to the statue. The statue won’t be very large.
Other interesting thing is ‘fabric-weaved doll’. As the temple is located within Phra Nang Din Village, you will see lots of things about local culture and intellect. For fabric-weaved dolls, these can be lovely souvenirs for yourself and your kids. Your kids are gonna love these dolls. The dolls have large heads and colorful costumes of different types. Beside of being so cute, the dolls also have perfect quality. They’re made of cotton fiber. Cotton fiber will be weaved and made into the legs, the hands, and the bodies of the dolls. These parts will be stuffed with synthetic fiber later before being attached together. In case you don’t know. you can find dolls like these in lots of provinces in Thailand, including Chiang Mai. Make sure to buy some or lots of them. They can be perfect both perfect souvenirs and birthday gifts.
Don’t just leave the temple yet! Don’t forget to worship a candle made by elderly people in the village first. You just have to pay 10 Baht for each candle Each candle is stuffed with spell written by the abbot. Just choose any candle that suits your birthday and it will be your good luck.
Then give yourself some time to take photos around the temples. Let your kids hold your camera and snap some shots of animal carvings, the golden roof, and the white gate.
